    Arboretum

The arboretum of the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest (UTHF), which was established in 1899, has a collection of approximately 270 tree species, including native and introduced species from mainland Japan and abroad. Most of the major tall tree species native to the Furano region can be seen here, including one of the oldest plantations of Japanese larch, Larix kaempferi, which is over 100 years old. The arboretum has a variety of larch species and their hybrids, which were used for crossbreeding experiments conducted in the 1960s. Silvicultural species introduced from East Asia, North America, and Europe from 1905 to the 1930s have also been planted. Seedlings of the native conifer species, Abies sachalinensis, Picea jezoensis, and Picea glehnii, are raised in the nursery of the arboretum.
